GENERAL SUMMARY:Athletic trainers (AT) are highly qualified, multi-skilled health care professionals who develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive health care programs for athletes and other patients. Under the direction of, on the prescription of or in collaboration with a physician, the practice of athletic training includes the treatment of an individual for risk management injury prevention, clinical evaluation and assessment, immediate care and treatment, and rehabilitation and reconditioning of injury or illness, or both.ESSENTIAL DUTIES:Injury and Illness Prevention and Wellness PromotionPromoting healthy lifestyle behaviors with effective education and communication to enhance wellness and minimize the risk of injury and illness.Duties may include:Identify risk factors by administering assessment, pre-participation examination and other screening instruments, and reviewing individual and group history and injury surveillance data.Using evidence-based medicine, metrics and research in assessing injury risk reduction or risk management;A holistic approach including promotion of physical, social, intellectual, emotional, mental and spiritual wellness.Examination, Assessment and DiagnosisImplementing systematic, evidence-based examinations and assessments to formulate valid clinical diagnoses and determine patients' plan of care.Duties may include:Obtaining a thorough history through observation, interview and review of relevant records;Perform a physical examination that includes diagnostic testing to formulate differential diagnoses;Formulate a clinical diagnosis by interpreting history and the physical examination to determine the appropriate course of action;Interpret signs and symptoms of injuries, illnesses or other conditions that require referral, utilizing medical history and physical examination to ensure appropriate care;Educate patients and family members about clinical findings, prognosis and plan of care to optimize outcomes and encourage compliance.Immediate and Emergency CareIntegrating best practices in immediate and emergency care for optimal outcomes.Duties may include:Establish Emergency Action Plans to guide appropriate and unified response to events and optimize outcomes;Triage to determine if conditions, injuries or illnesses are life-threatening;Implement appropriate emergency and immediate care procedures to reduce the risk of morbidity and mortality;Implement referral strategies to facilitate the timely transfer of care.Therapeutic InterventionRehabilitating and reconditioning injuries, illnesses and general medical conditions with the goal of achieving optimal activity level based on core concepts and using the applications of therapeutic exercise, modality devices and manual techniques.Duties may include:Optimize patient outcomes by developing, evaluating and updating the plan of care;Administer therapeutic exercises to patients using appropriate techniques and procedures to aid recovery to optimal function;Administer therapeutic devices to patients using appropriate techniques and procedures to aid recovery to optimal function;Administer manual techniques to patients using appropriate methods and procedures to aid recovery to optimal function;Administer therapeutic interventions for general medical conditions to aid recovery to optimal function;Determine patients' functional status using appropriate techniques and standards to return to optimal activity level.Healthcare Administration and Professional ResponsibilityIntegrating best practices in policy construction and implementation, documentation and basic business practices to promote optimal patient care and employee well-being.Duties may include:Evaluate organizational, personal and stakeholder outcomes;Develop policies, procedures and strategies to address risks and organizational needs;Practice within local, state and national regulations, guidelines, recommendations and professional standards;Use established documentation procedures to ensure best practice;Maintaining professional development and ensuring compliance with Board of Certification Standards of Professional Practice.This document represents the major duties, responsibilities, and authorities of this job, and is not intended to be a complete list of all tasks and functions. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential duties.Education / Training:Completion of a CAATE approved athletic training education program or educational equivalent required.Post-certification Master's degree in athletic training preferred.Work Experience:At least one year of related and expansive work experience in all aspects of athletic training or a combination of education and experience preferred.Certification, Licensure, Registration:Board of Certification, Inc. certified as an Athletic Trainer (ATC) required.Licensed as an Athletic Trainer (AT) through the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs required.Additional certifications and credentials obtained in health care (i.e. CSCS, PES, FMS, CKTP, EMT) preferred.Other Qualifications:Competent clinical and evaluation skillsAdvanced computer skills (MS Office, E-mail, web-based applications etc.)Familiarity with Sportsware and/or hospital based EPIC system preferred.Ability to work independently and prioritize delivery of services as needed.Excellent written and verbal communication skills requiredHIGH SCHOOL OUTREACHESSENTIAL DUTIES FURTHER DESCRIBED:Provides independent athletic training services encompassing the prevention, examination, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of emergent, acute or chronic injuries and medical conditions for athletes for games and practices as determined by the school Athletic Director (AD) and department supervisor.Collaborates and communicates with physicians, Beaumont staff, coaches, school administration, parents and the athlete to provide safe, timely, effective, efficient, and equitable compassionate, extraordinary patient centered care.Documents all care provided and patient treatment according to department documentation policy using Sportsware, an electronic medical record system.Meets all objectives and goals outlined in the department Quality program.Complies with department requirements for concussion management protocols and return to play policies from Beaumont Health and Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA).With appropriate parental consent, administers ImPACT baseline and post-injury computerized neurocognitive exams for all athletes.Completes yearly mandatory corporate and department continuing education, as well as maintain good standing with Board of Certification requirements and licensure maintenance, as determined by governing bodies.Possesses the ability to stay calm, compassionate, friendly, and empathetic to problem solve and prioritize delivery of services in a fast-paced, high stress environment.Attends scheduled department staff meetings to stay current on department and organization trends and updates.Maintains verbal, written and electronic communication and collaborates with interdisciplinary treatment team, referral sources, and physicians.Collaborate with intra and interdisciplinary team members regarding patient care. Collaborates with patient, and family in treatment and in discharge planning.Follows all written orders from supervising physician pertaining to injury or illness care, or both.Provide documentation to the physicians regarding the patient initially, at discharge, and at appropriate intervals.
