Job Title: Teacher - Head Start

FLSA: Non-Exempt

Salary Band: 1

Reporting to: Site Manager

Department: Whole Family Services - Early


To plan and implement a program of educational activities for preschool children that encourages age appropriate growth and development in a variety of areas.

Essential Functions:

Plan and implement a program of educational activities for preschool age children based on the High/Scope Curriculum.
Create a clean, safe classroom environment.
Assess each child's progress through a developmental screening skill checklist, parent comments, daily on-going assessment of children through anecdotal notes, scoring them and entering them into On Line COR and observation on a regular basis.
Write and implement daily lesson plans that meet the individual needs of children.
Plan, implement and update individual learning plans for each child in the classroom.
Plan and conduct at least two parent/teacher conferences and two home visits per child per program year.
Establish and maintain a two-way positive communication system with parents through such means as newsletters, flyers, phone calls and face-to-face communication.
Instruct children in appropriate use of classroom computer.
Develop curriculum activities that reflect the ethnic/multi-cultural makeup of the community.
Coordinate classroom volunteer programs and document appropriately.
Monitor and work in conjunction with other Head Start staff and volunteers to provide a well-organized classroom.
Provide educational experiences to include in center and other field trips.
Maintain confidentiality of information related to home and school environment.
Implement classroom nutrition, health, safety and mental health activities as outlined in the performance standards.
Attend staff meetings and appropriate trainings.
Provide activities that foster development of positive self-image and socialization.
Observe children on a regular basis for signs of possible delayed development, seek the assistance of specialists as needed and make any necessary accommodations.
Conduct classroom and education equipment inventory.
Maintain working relationships with families, staff and community that are accepting of differences.
Work cooperative as a member of team with other program and supervisory staff.
Maintain all required documentation i.e. home visits, parent teacher conferences, CACFP, attendance, developmental screenings and assessments and individual learning plans.
Comply with all licensing regulations and performance standards.
Promote parents as their child's "first and best teacher" through such means as parent/child activities, child development and child management information and use of classroom observation tool.
Maintain appropriate adult/child interactions as scored by CLASS.
Assist in securing In-Kind donations for the program.
Maintain a positive attitude towards assigned work, clients, and staff, and a willingness to work with others.
Perform work in a professional manner that upholds Wayne Metro's policies and procedures.
Other duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk, sit, see, talk and hear, and use hands to manipulate. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, climb steps, stoop, bend, kneel, or crouch. The employee is required to supervise students requiring the employee to match walking speed that matches the student and may at times require the ability to run to safeguard students. The employee must occasionally lift (up to 50 pounds), carry, and move students. Employee must occasionally move equipment and/or supplies. The job is performed for the most part in a school setting with occasional outside weather conditions. The noise level is that of a typical school setting.

Minimum Qualifications:

BA in Child Development or Early Childhood Education or coursework equivalent to a major in Early Childhood/ Child Development Education required.
Experience teaching preschool age children.
Great Start Readiness Teachers must have the degree; an equivalent is not a choice for the position.
Ability to develop and implement classroom curriculum that encourages academic, social, emotional and physical development of children three to five years of age.
Ability to work with children with disabilities.
Ability to be self-directed in the completion of tasks.
Ability to communicate effectively with young children and their families.
Proficiency in a 2nd language a plus.
Ability to work with and to demonstrate commitment, caring and respect for children and adults regardless of race, gender, age and cultural or ethnic background.
Knowledge of or ability to learn to conduct developmental assessments of children.
Good understanding of child development, age appropriate behaviors, common childhood behavior problems and appropriate interventions.
Ability to intervene with children's behaviors in a non-punitive and supportive manner.
Ability to work as a positive and productive member of a team.
Ability to develop and implement individual learning plans for children.
Ability to use child data from a variety of sources to inform planning for individual children, self-reflection on teaching practices, parent input and screenings.
Commitment to the welfare of the families the program serves, and to the delivery of quality services.
Ability and willingness to continue personal and professional growth and skill development.
Ability to engage in problem resolution, assesses need/problem objectively, and manages crisis situations.
Ability to communicate effectively to individuals and groups both orally and in writing.
Ability to organize, track, plan, implement, and evaluate component activities.
Ability to be resourceful, flexible, and adaptable.
Ability to give and receive constructive feedback.
Ability and willingness to make home visits.
Good interpersonal and professional skills including but not limited to professional appearance, tact, punctuality, and dependability.
Ability to work independently and to manage diversity.
Ability to lift 50lbs or more.
Assist in obtaining required In-Kind.

Minimum Competencies:

Working knowledge of basic internet applications and programs including Google technology and Microsoft Office Word and Excel. The ability to learn and utilize the necessary programs for this position.
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in written form.
Good interpersonal and professional skills including but not limited to professional appearance, tact, punctuality, and dependability.
Ability to provide services for those persons facing economic, social, health, age, and educational barriers.
Ability to work independently or in a team environment (as deemed necessary).
Perform work in a manner that upholds Wayne Metro policies and procedures.

Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.

Ability to travel to various sites.

Work Hours:

Work schedule is Monday - Friday, with specific hours (and occasional Saturdays) to be determined by department needs.
